Can You Tell Me?

  1. "Education is not what some people boastfully declare it to be. They say they can put knowledge into souls that lack it, as if they could put sight into blind eyes. ... But just as an eye cannot be turned around from darkness to light except by turning the whole body, so the instrument by which we learn must be turned around ... There would then be a craft concerned with how this instrument can be most easily and effectively turned around, not with how to put sight into it.:" -- Plato, Republic VII

Only a human being -- a rare sort of human being -- can turn the soul around.

  2. Well, I am not sure how one really follows a quote from Plato :-)

  3. I guess I would further argue that most electronic media are not only NOT BETTER than "conversation and questioning" w/r/t educational efficacy, but that they (the electronic media) are in fact a hindrance to the type of education - that is, the passing down of culture - that ought to be a society's focus.
    But maybe that's just me.
